Spring Cleaning with Essential Oils

Simple recipes for cleaning green

By Heather Bhagwan May 12, 2016
Spring has sprung! It’s time to pop out those screens, shake out those rugs and get rid of the winter dirt and grime. We open our windows to get some fresh, clean air but then fill our homes with harsh chemicals from cleaners that are irritating our skin and harming our lungs.

This seems counter productive and directly goes against my “work smarter not harder” philosophy in life. Which is why I’ve turned to more natural solutions in my home and for my family. Green cleaning in the home has become an increasingly popular topic in America and even more popular in parenting groups. All parents want to know how to keep germs and chemicals away from their new baby! But how do you decide which cleaners are actually safe and don’t have dangerous chemicals lurking inside those long ingredient lists? The easiest way to know exactly what is going inside your cleaners is to make them yourself with essential oils and a few other simple ingredients. This only takes a minute and is much easier than you think, plus you will save a ton of money!

Essential oils have been used for centuries for a wide variety of health and wellness purposes including cleaning naturally and effectively. It is important to use high quality essential oils that are therapeutic grade and do not have synthetic fillers because the ones with fillers are no better than the chemicals you find in the current cleaners you are using. dōTERRA Essential Oils is the brand I use and love! dōTERRA oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and have been third party tested by two separate companies to ensure purity and potency. I consider this to be a critical process in ensuring that what I’m using for my family is of the highest and purest quality.

Every home that is trying to clean green should have these important ingredients on hand:

  • Vinegar:  Both cleansing and odor removing.
  • Baking soda:  Cleansing, odor removing and great for scrubs and stains.
  • Castile Soap:  Gentle and all natural.  Great for making hand soaps, laundry soaps, scrubs, and cleaning wipes.
  • Washing Soda:  Although it is not safe to ingest due to it's high alkalinity, washing soda is great for making your own own detergents and for use on difficult stains.
  • Borax:  Also not meant for ingestion but it is a naturally occurring salt that is great for cleaning and laundry detergents.

Many essential oils have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and are incredibly effective in cleaning and sanitizing. Some of the most popular and effective ones are:

Lemon Essential Oil: Lemon is a powerful cleansing agent that purifies the air and surfaces, and can be used as a non-toxic cleaner throughout the home. It also works great for polishing wood and getting sticky things off surfaces. I also add lemon to my homemade glass and window cleaner for purifying benefits and because it smells awesome!

Lime Essential Oil: Due to its high limonene content, Lime can be diffused to purify the air. It is also an effective and natural surface cleaner. Lime is also known for it’s ability to uplift, balance and energize. Who couldn’t use a little of that while cleaning! Lime is also great for removing grease spots and sticker residue.

Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Essential Oil: Melaleuca is best known for its purifying properties. Used in a diffuser, Melaleuca is a powerful air cleansing agent. Or add a few drops of Melaleuca to a spray bottle, fill with water and use on surfaces to protect against environmental threats. Plus, Melaleuca is renowned for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin, which is much different than the irritating chemicals you find in conventional cleaners! I also add Melaleuca to my homemade creamy scrub and toilet bombs because it provides antibacterial benefits for the high traffic areas I use them on!

Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Eucalyptus has purifying properties that can be beneficial for cleansing surfaces and the air. As a bonus it also helps promote clear breathing and lessen tension. Combine with Lemon and Peppermint Essential oils in a spray bottle and use it to wipe down surfaces in your kitchen or bathroom!

dōTERRA On Guard Protective Blend Essential Oil: dōTERRA On Guard protects against environmental and seasonal threats with essential oils known for their positive effects on the immune system. This is quite the polar opposite of the toxic chemical cleaners most people typically use! It can also be used on surfaces throughout the home as a non-toxic cleaner. When diffused, dōTERRA On Guard helps purify the air. Add On Guard to water for an effective all-purpose surface cleaner or combine a few drops with Fractionated Coconut Oil for a natural hand cleanser. You can also easily make these handy all natural wipes that are AMAZING for quick easy clean ups!
