Spotlight on Mom-Owned Businesses

Local Mom Helps Herself and Others Find Confidence

A job where you can set your own hours, work from home, gain a new network of supportive friends, and help others feel better about themselves sounds too good to be true – but that’s exactly what Elizabeth Kay has found as a Rodan + Fields Independent Consultant. As part of our focus on moms who have taken that entrepreneurial leap, we sat down with Elizabeth to find out more about how she is finding success as a business owner.

Like many of us who were surprised when our skin issues didn’t magically clear up after those teenage years, Elizabeth was always on the lookout for skincare products that would work for her. After years of trying out a myriad of products, dermatologist visits, and prescription treatments, Elizabeth took a friend’s advice and tried out a skincare regimen from Rodan + Fields, a company founded by the dermatologists behind the wildly popular Proactiv acne treatment. She saw results in just a month, and was hooked. She’s not alone – just this year, Rodan + Fields has been featured in Allure (which named the Redefine Night Renewing Serum an April 2014 Editor’s Pick), Martha Stewart Weddings, Essence, Marie Claire, People StyleWatch, O the Oprah Magazine, and more.

The timing couldn’t have been better, and not just for Elizabeth’s skin concerns. A single mom to a 10 year old, Elizabeth was looking for a way to supplement her income from her full-time job without sacrificing valuable time with her daughter. As she fell in love with the Rodan + Fields product, she also fell in love with the idea of earning extra money sharing that love of the product to help others find solutions to their own skin challenges. She wasn’t blinded by that love, though – as many of us might feel just reading this article, Elizabeth was a little skeptical about whether this was a legitimate opportunity. So, she met with her attorney to review the independent consultant documentation and he gave her the green light.

Rodan + Fields offers four primary skincare systems: Reverse (for the appearance of brown spots, dullness, and discoloration), Redefine (for the appearance of lines, pores and loss of firmness), Unblemish (for acne and post-acne marks) and Soothe (for sensitive, irritated skin and facial redness; the Soothe system was recommended by Self magazine in April 2014). The systems are shipped monthly (no more running out and having to run to Ulta after work!) with the customer having total control each month over which items in the system to receive (each system contains face wash, toner, and moisturizer(s)). The company also offers a Redefine Macro Exfoliator tool that essentially gives you a facial experience in just 5 minutes a week.

Asked about how Elizabeth felt about starting a sales business (her full-time job is in IT), she replied, “I don’t see it as ‘sales’ at all! I get to share information about a product I love anyway, and isn’t that what we all do when we try something we love? We tell everyone about it, for free. I get to earn money, and see amazing transformations in the process. When you change your skin – especially for people who have struggled with issues for many years – you really change the way you see yourself.” She explained the strong support she receives from the company – weekly team conference calls, teambuilding and leadership development, having access to dermatologists on call for specific customer questions – and the energy boost the experience has provided. “My daughter sees that her mom is trying to do something for her family’s income, but in a way that allows me to still attend her school events and sports games. I definitely feel like I’m setting a good example for her.”

Elizabeth is just starting her entrepreneurial journey, but has already recouped the initial small investment she paid to join the company. Now she’s excited for what’s ahead. Rodan + Fields is relatively new to the independent consultant scene (it was initially offered as a department store product, but the founders realized that going to independent consultants would increase revenue while creating the opportunity for women around the world to start their own businesses), and has only 15,000 active consultants in the U.S. (compared to hundreds of thousands or more for other brands). Rodan + Fields is getting ready to launch in Canada, which Elizabeth points out makes it a great time to be a Michigan-based consultant. “Imagine if you got in at Mary Kay or Avon when they first started,” she points out. Elizabeth has developed a friendship with one of Rodan + Fields’ top earners, a former teacher who Elizabeth says has reached $5 million in sales in just 5 years and who is reportedly using the wealth to build an orphanage in India. “This company is full of women and men who are just good people,” Elizabeth says.
