Netflix is at once a dream -- on-demand, commercial-free shows, with the ability to have a kid-only queue -- and a conundrum -- what are all these shows, and how do I choose the best one for my kids? I was pleased to recently discover Dinotrux, an Emmy® Award winning original series that brings together two of my kids' favorite things - dinosaurs and trucks - while also delivering great stories about building friendships, working together and overcoming challenges.

Dinotrux (created by DreamWorks Animation Television) is inspired by the award-winning books by Chris Gall. The story follows the exciting larger-than-life adventures of Ty, a massive Tyrannosaurus Trux, and his best friend Revvit, a tiny razor-sharp Reptool.  These unlikely friends join forces with a rambunctious team of Dinotrux and Reptools, each with their own unique personality and skill, changing the world forever as they discover that together they can build a better world, help others and team up against D-Structs, the biggest and baddest Dinotrux of all.

Let me say, I am very choosy about what my kiddos watch. (In fact, I checked Common Sense Media before agreeing to review this series -- if it wasn't recommended by them, I wouldn't have taken the opportunity). Common Sense Media awarded Dinotrux its Seal of Approval, recognizing the show as a trusted choice for families with young children.  In their review, Common Sense Media called the show “a unique blend of action, comedy and adventure that makes it fun for the entire family to enjoy,” with great role models for young girls and boys. In my 4-year-old's review, the show "has lots of trucks but they are also dinosaurs and them helps each other. They have to be a team to get strong against the D-Structs."

The unexpected friendships in Dinotrux reinforce the message that friends come in all different shapes, sizes and herds.  Rather than dwelling on their differences, the Dinotrux learn to embrace new herds in order to build a supportive community.  This mirrors the experience kids go through as they venture out into the world of school and organized activities.

16 all new, action-packed episodes recently premiered on Netflix and are waiting for your kiddos to discover them! Watch our next newsletter for a giveaway of a wonderful set of Dinotrux books! The books are an awesome way to build discussion around the show, as you highlight the points about the show (teamwork, strength in differences) that also appear in the books. You can even extend beyond the book and show; we have been using leftover cardboard boxes to make our own Dinotrux crafts!
